What is x-block?

X-block is embedded in the schedule everyday for 30 minutes.  It is an important part of the day for interventions, announcements, organization, and teacher/student contact time.  It is also where the Second Step social emotional literacy program is taught.

 

How long are the passing periods?

Passing periods are 3 minutes long.

 

Do we still have recess after lunch?

Yes, each lunch period is 40 minutes long allowing time for lunch and outdoor recess.

 

Can we buy lunch?

Yes, our lunch service is Organic Life.  They offer a hot lunch meal, a la carte items, and a salad bar everyday.  View payment option and menus on the Lunch Menu webpage

 

How much homework will I have?

While there is no magic formula that we can offer, we can say that homework can be expected in most classes everyday.   Teachers use homework to reinforce learned material and extend critical thinking, as well as to practice or refine skills.  Students should use their assignment notebook to record homework assigned in each class.  Many teachers also list homework assignments on their websites.  

 

What is the schedule like?

NBJH follows a modified block schedule.  This means on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays, students will attend all 10 periods (40 minute classes).  On Tuesdays and Wednesdays students will attend half their classes for double the time (80 minute classes).  *Please note: students will have their lunch period and x-block every day, (ex. 6th graders will have period 5 (lunch) and period 8 (x-block) each day) those are not a double period.

Example:  

M: (all classes) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 

T:   (half your classes) 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9

W: (the other half of your classes) 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10

Th:(all classes) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

What clubs are offered?

Our current list of clubs can be found on our club and activities webpage and in the assignment notebook.   Some clubs we will offer are: Art Club, Culinary Club, French Club, Math Club, Media Club, Needlework and Knitting Club, Spanish Club, Video Game Design Club, and Woodworking Club.  Watch the news in the morning as new clubs can be proposed during the school year.

 

What sports can I play?

6th grade: Girls’ volleyball, Boys’ and Girls’ basketball, Boys’ volleyball, Track & Field, Cross Country, Girls’ softball

7th and 8th grade: Girls’ volleyball, Boys’ and Girls’ basketball, Boys’ volleyball, Track & Field, Cross Country, Girls’ softball, Cheerleading, Soccer
