The Northbrook Junior High class of 2017 class of 212 students celebrated their years in District 28 and prepared for the excitement of attending high school at a graduation ceremony held June 7 at Glenbrook North High School.

Two awards are presented at the ceremony. Sarah Gillespie  received The Rotary Award, which is for extraordinary work in the spirit of volunteerism and the Rotary motto “Service Above Self.”

The American Legion Award is awarded each year to one female student and one male student who are chosen by the teaching staff as best representing the six character qualities of courage, honor, leadership, patriotism, scholarship and service. This year, the runners up were Amanda Gregory and Will Erens. The winners were Sophia Sparacio and Dean Kousiounelos.

Student speaker Mack Oliphant said he will take with him to high school three lessons he learned while attending Northbrook Junior High: Don’t judge people, change is constant and school is trying to help.

“NBJH is a place where grades matter, but what matters most is what you learn from your grades,” Oliphant said.

Student speaker Brooke Falk said entering junior high was like trading in your childhood toys for a Rubik’s Cube, with each year representing a new side, or color, to solve. Each of three years of junior high represented a side.

“My wish for everyone is that you all enjoy the exciting and unpredictable journey of solving the rest of your “colors,” Falk said.
