Mary Sturgill

An educator with experience in both general education and special education and who has served as an instructional coach is the new principal at Westmoor School. Mary Sturgill replaces Dr. Chris Finch, effective July 1.

Ms. Sturgill has four years of experience as a school principal, first at Emerson Elementary, a preK-8 school in Melrose Park, and since 2013 at John Mills Elementary School in Elmwood Park.  A former resident of the Pacific Northwest, Ms. Sturgill began her teaching career in 2003 at the Evergreen School District of Vancouver, Washington.  She worked as an elementary classroom teacher in both general education and special education roles.  Ms. Sturgill also served as an instructional coach, where she worked with teachers to strengthen their instructional skills.  She has established herself as a visionary educational leader overseeing assessment design, professional development, and administrative leadership.

The District conducted a comprehensive search for this key leadership role by seeking staff and parent perspectives on the personal and professional qualities that a successful elementary school principal should possess.  These qualities were taken into account during the interview process, which included teachers, parents, and administrators.

Ms. Sturgill earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Oregon.  She has a master’s degree in special education from Portland State University.  Her post-master’s work for her administrative certification was completed at Washington State University.

Ms. Sturgill replaces Dr. Chris Finch, who was principal for eight years. Dr. Finch has accepted a position as Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning in another district.
