About Northbrook Junior High
It is our goal to partner with parents to create a learning environment that is engaging, challenging, and supportive.
Our students consistently score well above average on local and state assessments. In recent years NBJH has received the Academic Achievement Award by the State of Illinois. NBJH continues to refine curriculum in all content areas as we transition to the recent implementation of the Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. As we emphasize comprehensive literacy strategies throughout all classrooms, many of our teachers have adopted the workshop model as an effective instructional tool.
Three days each week students have a ten-period day. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays students attend half of their classes for 80-minute periods. Sixth through eighth graders complete a core curriculum in language arts, math, science, social studies, and world language (Spanish or French). Resource support periods are available for students as needed. Students are also provided with opportunities to explore elective interests in art, drama, music, woodworking, STEM, and family and consumer science. Additionally, we have physical education for all grades, with one quarter each year devoted to health and wellness.
Each day students have a 30-minute X-Block period. During X-Block, students develop study skills, complete homework, and develop a sense of community. This block of time is also used to provide academic intervention support in math and literacy three days per week. Additionally, X-Block serves as a monthly time for X-Block teachers to hold social emotional literacy discussions with students and organize group activities to reinforce those themes.
Fine Arts and Activities
We offer a music program that includes band, orchestra, and choir. Students attend weekly lessons with one of the music directors as well as morning rehearsals two to three times a week. Our school’s performance groups are consistently recognized locally, regionally, and statewide with superior ratings. Thanks to our dedicated staff and supportive PTO, NBJH students can also participate on athletic teams and in a variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities throughout the year.
Highly Qualified Staff
Our teachers are highly qualified professionals committed to excellence in education. They will build on your children’s current skills and help them develop the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to be successful in school and in life. They exemplify the District 28 motto of “Teaching, Learning, Caring.”
We are also fortunate to work in collaboration with parents who offer tremendous support to the learning environment. Our school benefits from an active PTO, which supervises our school store, sponsors class field trips, chaperones social events, and coordinates a career day every other year.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students and school. We encourage you to visit the school to see for yourself why our teachers, parents, and students make Northbrook Junior High School a great place to learn and grow.
